BlackRock Inc.<\/strong> has acquired a controlling stake in key ports near the Panama Canal<\/strong>, effectively removing Chinese-linked influence<\/strong> over one of the world\u2019s most critical shipping routes. The $23 billion transaction<\/strong>, which includes $5 billion in debt<\/strong>, transfers control from Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings<\/strong> to a U.S.-led consortium spearheaded by BlackRock<\/strong>, according to AP<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deal grants BlackRock control over 43 ports across 23 countries<\/strong>, including Mexico, the Netherlands, Egypt, Australia, Pakistan, and Panama\u2019s Balboa and Cristobal ports<\/strong>, which serve as the primary gateways to the Panama Canal<\/strong>. This move comes after longstanding calls from President Donald Trump and national security officials<\/strong> to reduce China\u2019s control over global infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fox Business<\/a> detailed the acquisition, stating that BlackRock and its partner Terminal Investment Limited (TiL) will jointly operate the ports under the BlackRock subsidiary Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese world-class ports facilitate global growth. Through our deep connectivity to organizations like Hutchison and MSC\/TIL and governments around the world, we are increasingly the first call for partners seeking patient, long-term capital,\u201d<\/strong> said BlackRock CEO Larry Fink<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CK Hutchison co-managing director Frank Sixt<\/strong> emphasized that the deal was \u201cpurely commercial\u201d<\/strong> and had no relation to recent political tensions over Panama\u2019s port operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the deal, U.S. lawmakers celebrated the removal of China\u2019s influence<\/strong> over the Panama Canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homeland GOP echoed the sentiment<\/strong>, warning that China has used its commercial port operations in the Western Hemisphere to project power, enable surveillance, and pre-position for conflict<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s Push to Reclaim Control Over the Panama Canal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned<\/strong> that the U.S. may take back control of the Panama Canal<\/strong> if Panama does not take steps to curb Chinese influence and adjust its operating policies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a post on Truth Social<\/a>, Trump declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe United States has a vested interest in the secure, efficient, and reliable operation of the Panama Canal, and that was always understood. We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further stated that if Panama fails to manage the canal according to U.S. strategic interests<\/strong>, Washington could demand its return<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump also emphasized the historic role of the Panama Canal in U.S. commerce and military strategy<\/strong>, noting that over 70% of all transits through the canal serve U.S. ports<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the U.S. This complete \u2018rip-off\u2019 of our Country will immediately stop\u2026.\u201d<\/strong> Trump warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
